Electronics Product Development Team Leader

REPORTS TO:                    Engineering Manager

BMAC Ltd is a medium size lighting manufacturer to road and rail transportation. Our products can be found throughout the UK and European transport networks. The company’s history stretches back almost a century over which it has been a dominant supplier to the public transport manufacturers. In more recent times BMAC has become a part of the Methode group of companies with ambitious plans to grow BMAC into more international markets and also develop new products. These products will not be restricted to lighting and will add technologies for the next generation of EV public transport vehicles. We plan to grow our team of skilled engineers to meet these challenges.

A position exists for a team leader with a strong background in electronic product development with leadership skills.  Reporting to the engineering Manager who will act as mentor and specialist in compliance and legacy products. You will joining a small engineering team responsible for the design and support of lighting and lighting related products for road and rail transportation. Developing new concepts and ideas for customer quotations and internal product development will be an essential part of the job requiring creativity and ingenuity. The role will interface and cooperate with sales, materials/procurement, manufacturing, and quality therefore will require an individual with good interpersonal and communication skills.  A formal electronics qualification and demonstrable practical experience, with a track record of successful electronic designs are essential. All products are inherently electro-mechanical so a good appreciation of mechanical design principals will be helpful. Any experience in lighting or road/rail electromechanical products would be advantages. Managing team priorities and workload to ensure effective delivery to project deadlines will form part of the duties. This will involve planning own work and that of two other mechanical engineers.

The main duties of the position are:

  • As the principal electronics engineer you will be able to design robust analogue and digital circuits.
  • Competent with PCB layout. Considering manufacturability and EMC design practices.
  • Competent with microcontrollers and programming in C. Typically Microchip and Atmel.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve LED drivers, power supplies and control systems for lighting and related products.
  • Produce detailed Bills of Materials for products.
  • Produce product documentation.
  • Maintain existing product designs and documentation when changes are required.
  • Provide technical assistance to Customers as required.
  • Liaison with test houses to plan and execute required “Type Testing” of products.
  • Liaison with Far Eastern design and manufacturing partners.
  • Coordinate the engineering team and its priorities according to project requirements.
  • Work with the engineering manager to deliver robust product designs.

Materials Planner/Buyer

REPORTS TO:                  Operations Manager

DEPARTMENT:                 Operations

LIAISON WITH:                Sales, Customers, Suppliers, Quality, Engineering, Production

 

A position exists for an experienced materials planner and buyer to join a small Supply Chain team responsible for materials planning, procurement and factory scheduling.  Ensuring that achievable delivery dates are offered to Sales and Production Orders completed on time.  The role will interface directly with Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality therefore will require an individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

 

The duties of the position are:

 

  • To source all materials and services required to support the production of complex LED lighting products, for unique contract work or standard / recurring products
  • To negotiate with suppliers to achieve best cost, discounts, price breaks, etc.
  • To generate Purchase Orders for all materials, sub-contract operations, finished parts, non-stocked items, etc. to agreed manufacturing requirements, specifications and customer schedules
  • To utilise the company MRP system (Material Requirements Planning) to optimise stocks of component parts and finished goods, ensuring these are maintained within agreed levels
  • To practice order intake control by controlling the completion dates agreed on new orders, taking into consideration current order position(s)
  • To liaise with Sales, Production and Suppliers on all matters that may be relevant to ensuring materials and/or services are provided as required and at specified quality levels
  • To co-ordinate the activities of those departments providing specifications, manufacturing information, tools, etc. in order to anticipate and prevent delays to Production
  • To utilise the MRP system and Job Review functionality to manage the raising of Job requisitions and program Works Orders into the factory floor for manufacture
  • Review loaded hours’ calculations to ensure there is sufficient resource capacity to produce workloads for period
  • Maintain database containing latest working hour calculations for product manufacture times
  • Where appropriate and required, the timely release of Works Cards to Stores for kitting
  • Manage the in-house production scrap process and where appropriate raise scrap notes for approval by the Operations Manager
  • To generate shop floor documentation as required by Manufacturing/Sales Forecasts for customer schedules
  • To maintain a good working relationship with the Production/Stores Supervisors and their staff
  • To initiate kit marshalling and associated shortage control procedures with the objective of ensuring that that all parts are available prior to commencement of assembly
  • To attend progress meetings as required in order to represent Supply Chain/Production control and be prepared to report on the material/work in progress status of each job or contract
  • To participate in vendor assessment and quality checks, which may include and site visits, as required. Completing the associated documented and reports
  • To maintain supplier files for address, contact telephone numbers, email addresses etc. and update on a regular basis
  • To maintain supplier lead times for all products and update as required
  • To generate Purchasing and Production Control reports for Management team
  • To perform any other duties in the Supply Chain/Production Control/Purchasing Area which may be requested by the Head of the Department

and have good knowledge of the following:

  • MRP systems
    • Knowledge of Syspro would be an advantage but the successful applicant will be very conversant with the operation of MRP, Production Planning and Scheduling, BOM
  • Understanding how manufacturing and production processes are organised
  • Techniques to plan production. MPS experience would be particularly helpful
  • Excel – able to analysis data
  • Word- able to produce reports

Qualifications

  • Professional qualification e.g. CIPS, is desirable but not essential
  • Experience in Supply Chain, Procurement and Production Control roles
  • Automotive experience would be particularly useful
